It is getting more and more real that we have been dreaming about this for seven years and now it is actually going to happen in less than four months. This is just a quick update to give a high level overview of where everything stands as of today! There will be many more details to come.
We have plane tickets and our official date of departure! June 4, 2018... Less than four months. We fly into Quito, Ecuador and then make our way to the coast. Right now, we are planning to spend the first few weeks volunteering with a workaway host in the Manabí province.
We got a trailer... The plan is to fit everything we don't sell or donate into a 6'x10' utility trailer that we are fortunate enough to be able to store for free on one of our parents' property. We paid $1,000 for the trailer which is going to be a lot more cost effective than renting a storage unit for an extended period of time.
We got our visas for Bolivia! This was actually one of the more stressful hurdles to clear. Bolivia is one of the only countries in South America that we plan to visit that has strict visa requirements. This is a reciprocity requirement that came about in 2007 when the US began charging Bolivian citizens a fee to come to the US. Nevertheless, we printed off the application, mailed our passports to the Bolivian consulate in Houston and a week or so later we got them back. Success!
Our next steps are to get our possessions paired down so they fit into 360 cubic feet, spend as much time with family and friends as we can, and wait patiently until the day we look out our window at a sunny beach instead of eight inches of snow!
